Umbrella
An umbrella company is a company that employs contractors who work on temporary assignments via recruitment agencies. The umbrella company deducts tax and national insurance at source and charges the agency contractor a fee for their services.
As an agency contractor, you can benefit from utilising umbrella companies as it gives you entitlement to full employment rights, access to Personal Accident Cover, a Health Cash Plan and a Private GP Helpline. Continuous employment can also be easily demonstrated even if you are working on numerous temporary contracts, which can be useful for mortgage or loan applications.
The umbrella company will charge you a fee for their service.
Self-Employed
If you are geniunely self-employed and are not under the supervision, direction and control of the client / hirer, then you can engage as a sole trader via a payroll business.
The payroll business will deduct the appropriate tax and charge you a fee for their service.
Personal Service Company (PSC)
Alternatively, you are able to supply services via a personal service company (PSC) and engage directly with Now Dutton Ltd. You will be issued with a Contract for Services between Now Dutton Ltd and the PSC and payment will be made directly from Now Dutton Ltd to the PSC. If your role is deemed to be outside IR35 and your PSC has gross tax status, then we are able to make gross payment. If the client / hirer you are providing your services to deems your role to be inside IR35 and issues us with a status determination statement to this effect, then income tax and national insurance deductions will need to be taken by Now Dutton Ltd at source.
To be eligible for the PSC option, you will need to provide us with the company registration certificate, VAT certificate (if applicable), written proof of business banking details and the company certificate of public liability insurance. If you are working in the construction industry, you will also need to provide your company's UTR number so that we can verify your tax status.
A weekly invoice also needs to be submitted to accompany your timesheet. A self-billing option is also available to avoid the need to submit weekly invoices, please speak to your consultant for more information.
No fee is charged for this option.
PAYE
If your role is subject to supervision, direction and control, then the traditional PAYE option may be for you.
You will be issued with a PAYE Contract for Services between you personally and Now Dutton Ltd and payment will be made directly to you by Now Dutton Ltd.
Income tax and national insurance contributions at the standard rate or the rate issued by HMRC will be deducted from your gross earnings each week.
You will also be entitled to be auto-enrolled into the company's workplace pension scheme after twelve weeks continuous working. A 4% deduction will be taken from your pensionable earnings, which will be topped up to 5% by means of tax relief if you are eligible. Now Dutton Ltd will also make a 3% contribution, meaning that your total pension contribution will be 8% of your pensionable earnings.
No fee is charged for this option.
CV Writing Tips
Keep It Up to Date
One of the most important things to remember about a CV is that it needs to be kept up to date. By this we don't just mean your recent work history, but up to date with technological advancements. Don't think that a CV that looked attractive ten years ago will still be appealing to a hirer nowadays.
Make the Most of the Space You Have
If you've still got an 'Objective' section at the start then this needs removing. Your 'objective' is obviously to get the job and so with limited room to impress, this space could be put to better use instead with a concise 'Professional Summary' which tells the recruiter why you are the best person for the job. This should be three to four sentences at the most and should highlight your most relevant skills and capabilities............and don't forget to tailor these to the role you are applying for.
Take Advantage of Keywords
In recent years, most recruitment agencies and hiring companies have begun to use what's called an ATS (applicant tracking system) which automatically filters CV's for specific keywords and some immediately reject applications without these. Whilst this is a useful tool for hirers, if your CV doesn't contain the right keywords, it could mean it's rejected without even being read. Look for keywords in the job advertisement and job description and make sure these all feature in your CV.
Keep to the Point
Use your skills and experience section to highlight your 'selling points'. These don't need to be long drawn-out paragraphs that lose the reader's attention but should be eye-catching bullet points, which clearly show your ability to do the role.
Avoid Non-Essential Information
As much as nobody likes to admit it, unconscious discrimination can still happen just from sight of a small piece of information. To avoid this, omit information such as age, marital status, gender, sexuality, disability, etc and just stick to the facts relevant to your abilities. There is no requirement to list the dates you attended school or job history going back any further than 10 to 15 years. Also, don't waste space listing your hobbies. Most recruiters have usually made up their mind long before they reach this section, so don't use up valuable space. Remember an ideal CV should be two pages at the most.
Simply your CV's Appearance
There is no longer a need to add fancy graphics, headshots or images to your CV, as also don't forget these may look completely different when opened up on a mobile phone than they did on your desktop at home. The modern recruiter is looking for a clean and simple look that is straight to the point and instantly gives them all the information they are looking for.
Lastly.......
Proof read your CV before sending. There is nothing worse than a CV containing spelling mistakes and bad grammar.
